The body’s reaction to anything that demands an adjustment is what we know to be called stress. Mental, physical, and emotional responses are the way in which the body reacts to those adjustments. Stress assists the body in preparing for situations that may be dangerous, known as the fight or flight response.

When an individual is feeling stress, their glands are producing a bigger quantity of the compounds called cortisol, noradrenaline, and cortisol. These chemicals are what produce the physical manifestations of stress including sweating, alertness, heightened muscle preparedness, and increased heart rate.

The changes that happen in the body with a stress response also include an increase in blood pressure, slowing of the digestive system, tense muscles, restlessness or trouble sleeping, and a decrease in immune system activity.(1)
