Essential Oils For Neuropathy

Essential Oils For Neuropathy

So you have pain and numbness in your hands and feet, a feeling of weakness, poor coordination, and maybe even paralysis. The culprit? That darn neuropathy.

It is hard to get through the day because wanting to do the things that you love is not enough. Maybe you feel like you have exhausted all of your options when it comes to relieving those symptoms.

Regardless, you have come to the right place. This article gives a great review of seven different essential oils (or essential oil combinations) in the hopes that you will find something that works for you.

What is a neuropathy, what causes it, are there any cures, and what are my options?

Before going into the essential oils, let’s first get a handle on what exactly you might be going through. This varies for everyone, so do not either be alarmed or lose hope by the information in this article. Life is beautiful and your life journey is amazing because you are strong.

A neuropathy means you have somehow damaged your peripheral nerves. These nerves connect to your brain and spinal cord in order to send information out to the rest of the body.

You may have gotten the neuropathy from a traumatic injury, an infection, metabolic problems, exposure to toxins, or maybe you just inheritated it. Regardless, you have the symptoms, which can include anything from tingling to paralysis.

There is not exactly a definitive cure for neuropathies mainly because they can be caused by extremely different things. A change in diet could help, as could yoga or physical therapy, depending on the cause.

But, with plenty of treatment options out there, you are bound to find some relief. Essential oils are one such aid.

Diabetic Neuropathy Massage Oil

If your neuropathy is due to diabetes, this might be a great option for you. In a study conducted in 2010, sixty participants received these essential oils (combined with homeopathic remedies). After just thirty minutes into the treatment, 93% of the participants reported a decrease in pain. In addition, no adverse reactions were experienced by the participants.
The five different essential oils are geranium oil (Pelargonium graveolens), lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia), bergamot oil (Citrus aurantium), tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) and eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus globulus).
To make it, you will need a carrier oil. Try coconut oil, or jojoba oil, or even shea butter. There are plenty of options out there, so go with one that you normally would use. But be sure to try to pick a natural oil rather than a manufactured lotion or moisturizer.

You will need:
3 drops geranium
3 drops lavender
2 drops bergamot
2 drops eucalyptus
2 drops tea tree oil
2 tablespoons carrier oil

In a bowl, combine essential oils and add in the carrier oil last. You can store the mixture in a glass bottle or empty dispenser. Now, simply massage the mixture over the areas that are causing you pain and see if you notice a difference.

Number Two: Three Essential Oils Combination

Maybe the first option did not work for you. That is okay. Try this one out!

Go with:
3 drops frankincense
3 drops cypress
1 drop lavendar
1-2 tablespoons carrier oil

The frankincense essential oil has anti inflammatory properties and benefits the skin at the same time. The cypress essential oil helps the circulatory system and helps to decrease swelling. And, the lavendar essential oil, known to be calming, helps in cell renewal and healing.

In addition, other oils you could substitute include:
2 drops peppermint
2 drops lemongrass

Peppermint is highly effective due to its antispasmodic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory qualities. Not to mention, the scent is stimulating.

And, lemongrass is known to be analgesic, work as an antidepressant and sedative, and help with inflammation. Analgesic just means it helps relieve pain by acting as a painkiller.

Number Three: Combo of Three Oils

Try a combination of:
3 drops Roman chamomile
3 drops lavender
3 drops helicrysum
1-2 tablespoons carrier oil

The chamomile decreases oxidative stress, as shown in a 2014 study. Helicrysum has been known to be antispasmodic in that it eases muscle spasms. It is a pain relieving essential oil, has anti inflammatory properties, and can calm the nerves.

You can experiment with different ratios depending on the symptoms that you have. For instance, if your muscles are especially distressed and irritated, but your nerves are actually causing you less distress, try adding more helicrysum.

Number Four: Essential Oil Combination of Five Oils

Here is another great combination of essential oils. As with the other essential oil treatments, it is best to have a carrier oil. This makes it more comfortable to put on and dilutes the concentration (which can be surprisingly strong).

2 drops peppermint
2 drops eucalyptus
2 drops frankincense
3 drops rosemary
2 drops lavender
2 drops tablespoons carrier oil

The peppermint oil can improve circulation, as well as support the nervous system, while the eucalyptus oil can relieve muscle spasms. It also has anti inflammatory properties.

The rosemary essential oil helps to improve circulation while also relaxing muscles and suppressing muscle spasms.

Finally, lavender is a sedative and is adaptogenic, which means it helps combat the negative effects of stress, and restores the body to its normal functions.

Number Five: Seven Oil Master-Peace

Try out this one out. It is full of a diverse array of oils to target almost all aspects of a neuropathy symptom. You will need two drops of each:

3 drops cypress
2 drops helicrysum
3 drops rosemary
2 drops marjoram
4 drops wild orange
3 drops ylang ylang
1 drop peppermint
2-3 tablespoons carrier oil

Once again, take some time to determine the right balance of each oil for yourself. These oils are good solutions for various symptoms.

Cypress essential oil helps circulation to the extremities. This is especially good for treating neuropathies as tingling and numbness is common in the hands and feet. Helicrysum, due to its aid in swelling and inflammation, supports the healing of nerves.

When there is less inflammation in the body, the body can heal. Rosemary essential oil is unique, based on recent research on carnosol (part of the rosemary plant), in that it may actually help nerve growth and heal nerve tissues.

Marjoram essential oil can be helpful for tense nerves and muscles due to its soothing effects, whereas wild orange essential oil also helps with numbness and tingling due to its energetic nature.

And, ylang ylang essential oil is sedative and can strengthen the nervous system while also repairing damage.

Number Six: Combination of Four Essential Oils for Comprehensive Relief

rab your carrier oil and try these out for size. You will need Juniperberry, Basil, Tangerine, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy essential oils.

In addition, you could try these recipes:
2 drops juniperberry
2 drops geranium
2 drops helichrysum
1 tablespoon carrier oil

Or this one:
6 drops geranium
4 drops helichrysum
2 drops cypress
4 drops juniperberry
1 drop peppermint
2-3 tablespoons carrier oil

Juniperberry is anti rheumatic and antispasmodic, which will help with joints and muscles. Basil is an analgesic and antispasmodic, and also an antidepressant.

Tangerine is also antispasmodic and sedative, not to mention calming. And, Blue Tansy has anti inflammatory qualities, along with being an analgesic.

Number Seven: Concoct Your Own or Buy an Essential Oil Treatment

There are so many different essential oils to choose from. Luckily, this means that you can try different essential oils until you find the right combination that works for you, on any given day.

If you still need help, there are special blends that have already been created, and you can purchase them ready to go. This might be cheaper than going out to buy individual essential oils to make your own.

Nerve Repair™ has basil in it, which is a great nerve calmer. It helps reduce nerve damage, and combats nerve pain. In addition, it can also improve nerve receptivity. Finally, it helps stimulate the nerves, which can help them heal. These findings were found in a study that was published in the the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

Parasympathetic™ contains Clove oil, which has been known to relieve pain due to its anti-inflammation, antispasmodic and analgesic properties. Supposedly working by blocking nerve signals as they send pain messages to the brain, it is a highly effective barrier. Therefore, the Parasympathetic™ oil helps reduce the inflammatory response that the body might have from neuropathy symptoms. Finally, there was a study conducted on rats by the Journal of Planta Medica. It found that a chemical compound in the clove essential oil helps recover nerve functions in rats diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy.

Circulation™ is designed to improve circulation, which helps people with neuropathies specifically in getting blood flow to the extremities like the hands and feet. It is especially formulated for those with diabetic neuropathies.

Anti Inflammatory™ is just that: to decrease inflammation in the body. It also works to regenerate damaged tissues that might have been damaged due to the increased inflammation.

It works especially well on tissues that surround the nerves, and includes the Ylang Ylang essential oil and also Frankincense. It also works by helping to improve the accuracy of nerve signals to eliminate pain.

Finally, Migraine Relief™ has a whole host of essential oils that help provide relief from symptoms like inflammation and spasms. It consists of Basil, Marjoram, Lavender, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile and Helichrysum, which are all great essential oils for treating neuropathies.

Together, these essential oils can repair connective tissues and decrease nerve pain, regenerate nerves, calm the entire nervous system, reduce swelling, decrease nerve tension, and improve circulation.

Studies on Essential Oils for Treating Neuropathies

Several studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of essential oils in treating neuropathies. For instance, a study done on Peppermint, Geranium Rose, Black Pepper, and Rosemary showed that these essential oils were effective in increasing sensation and circulation in extremities in a patient with diabetic and peripheral neuropathy.

Another case study using the same essential oil combination showed that the essential oils were effective in increasing circulation and decreasing pain in peripheral neuropathy.

Because essential oils are not always deemed the most effective treatment in western society and medicine, there are still limited amounts of research to back up claims made by a number of people who have found serious relief.

Here is one research experiment opportunity that is looking for participants. It is a chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy clinical trial.

Conclusion

Essential oils have been used for centuries as an effective way of treating discomfort and ailments. Neuropathies are no different. As such, there are a number of different options when it comes to selecting good essential oils to treat, and even completely relieve, a patient of symptoms from a neuropathy.
When it comes to medicine, there is a certain benefit to taking charge of your own health care. While so many medical practitioners are doing their best to treat the individual, it is getting more and more difficult.
Therefore, the more that you can do on your own, the better off you may be. However, always consult with your doctor to be sure that you will not cause yourself more harm.

All in all, your body is like a science experiment and you are the scientist. Researching different essential oils is a great start.
The next step is to have your own science experiment. You may find that on rainy days, certain oils are better than if it were a cold day. Maybe one oil works better on your hands while another works better on your feet.

Hopefully this article gave you some helpful tips, recipes, and resources to get you feeling better. At the end of the day, it is about improvement and comfort. Take your time massaging the oil into your body. That love will go a long way in facilitating your recovery.
