Essential Oils For Leg Cramps

An involuntary muscle contraction causes a spasmodic pain for a person which is usually described as a cramp. Although cramps are usually temporary, if they aren’t taken care of, they may be repeated. The pain they can cause is sometimes so severe it leads to immobility of the muscle temporarily or heart palpitations.

One approach to relief of cramps is over-the-counter medication for pain. For quicker relief, a person could try creams. However, essential oils can be used to heal the muscle contractions causing the pain.

Leg Cramps

It is common for old folks to suffer from the pain of leg cramps. However, pregnant women, teenagers, and night workers often suffer from leg cramps as well. The calves or soles of feet are often affected by muscle contractions. These muscle contractions causing cramps may last only a few seconds, or they can last for several minutes.

Causes of leg cramps include the following:

  • An intense calve workout
  • Dehydration
  • Pregnancy
  • Prolonged sitting and standing reducing a person’s blood flow
  • A mineral deficiency which causes potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium levels to be low
  • Medical conditions which include cirrhosis, hemodialysis, cardiovascular disease, stenosis, lumbar canal, and diabetes

For the best results of relief of leg cramps, the essential oils you should use include the following: cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, fennel, ginger, lemongrass, marjoram, peppermint, thyme, turmeric, vetiver, or wintergreen.

Method #1 of Using Essential Oils to Relieve Leg Cramps

The ingredients of the pain relief spray include:

  • 2 teaspoons of aloe vera gel
  • 10 drops peppermint oil
  • 5 drops lemongrass oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus oil
  • 5 drops wintergreen oil
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • Cold water


Steps to prepare pain relief spray:

  • Step One: Put some cold water into an 8 oz fine mist spray bottle which you can purchase here
  • Step Two: Mix the peppermint oil, lemongrass oil, eucalyptus oil, and wintergreen oil into the aloe vera gel. Add this mixture to the fine mist spray bottle.
  • Step Three: Shake the ingredients which are in the fine mist spray bottle. By shaking the ingredients, you will combine them.
  • Step Four: Using the spray bottle, spray the area of your cramp for relief.

Method #2 of Essential Oils Therapy Coupled with an Ice Block

Materials and ingredients needed:

  • 10 drops of lavender oil
  • 10 drops of peppermint oil
  • 10 drops of wintergreen oil
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • Distilled water
  • A rectangular container

Steps to Prepare Ice Block:

  • Step One: Begin by putting the water into a rectangular shaped container. Mix the essential oils and vegetable oil together. Add the mixture to the water in the container.
  • Step Two: Combine the items of step one by mixing them well.
  • Step Three: Put the container with the mixture into your freezer in order to make an ice block. Using a towel, wrap the ice block with it. 
  • Step Four: Place the ice block wrapped with a towel onto the area of the cramp and hold it in place as long as necessary for relief of the pain.


Method #3: Hot and Cold Vetiver Oil Compresses

This relief method is done by wetting a washcloth with a mixture of vetiver oil and ice-cold water and wetting another washcloth with vetiver oil and hot water. You then alternate the washcloths.

Materials and Ingredients Needed:

  • Two soft washcloths

Steps to Prepare Soft Washcloths:

  • Step One: Three drops of vetiver oil should be placed in the hot water in a bowl. Mix the drops into the hot water thoroughly. Wet one soft washcloth with the mixture.
  • Step Two: Wring the washcloth with vetiver oil and hot water. Press the washcloth with the hot mixture onto the area of your cramp.
  • Step Three: Three drops of vetiver oil should be placed in the ice-cold water in a bowl. Mix the drops of vetiver oil thoroughly in the ice-cold water. Wet one soft washcloth with the vetiver oil and cold-water mixture.
  • Step Four: Wring the washcloth with the oil and cold-water mixture. Press the washcloth with the cold mixture onto the area of your cramp. 
  • Step Five: Continue to alternate the hot and cold washcloths with the vetiver oil until the pain of your cramp is relieved.
  • Step Six: When you experience the pain of your cramp, you can apply the following pain cream to the area of your leg cramp.


Pain Cream Recipe

Materials and Ingredients Needed:

  • 8 oz. amber glass jar
  • Hand Mixer
  • Double Boiler
  • ½ cup shea butter
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax pastilles
  • ¼ cup of coconut oil
  • 10 drops lavender oil
  • 5 drops marjoram oil
  • 15 drops peppermint oil
  • 5 drops vetiver oil

Steps to Prepare Cream:

  • Step One: Place the shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax pastilles into a double boiler until they are liquid. 
  • Step Two: Allow the melted oils to cool down for approximately 2 minutes. After the melted oils have cooled down, add the essential oils and stir using a hand mixer until combined well.
  • Step Three: Transfer the ingredients in step two to a glass jar.
  • Step Four: Allow the ingredients of step three to cool down in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. When the mixture has hardened, it has cooled down sufficiently.
  • Step Five: Apply the cream to the painful area caused by your leg cramp for relief.


Nocturnal Cramps

Nocturnal leg cramps are suffered by roughly 1/3 of adults 60 years old or older and athletes as well. As many as half of adults 80 years old or older suffer from them. These cramps are sudden, painful, and intense. The muscles in the legs, feet, and other extremities will contract in the middle of the night making sleep very difficult. Roughly 40% of those affected by these nocturnal cramps report being awakened by the pain several days in a week. 

What causes nocturnal cramps? Their causes are quite different from the typical muscle cramps. Frankly, neurophysiological studies have shown nocturnal leg cramps have been found to be a debilitating condition caused by a magnesium deficiency. Since a magnesium deficiency is a cause, solving the deficiency can be the solution to the problem.

However, you may also have neuromuscular dysfunctions or other key nutrient deficiencies. Therefore, supplementing your magnesium won’t eliminate your nighttime cramping.

Supplementing your magnesium isn’t enough to eliminate nocturnal leg cramps. You must take a specific type of magnesium just before bedtime.   • Be sure to be hydrated. Muscle cramps and dehydration are related. When you exercise, you should drink water before and after. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day. 
  • Warm your muscles before and after you exercise. You can do this by doing a stretching routine. If you do this, the possibility of your developing cramps will be reduced.
  • Drink warm milk before going to bed. This will not only cure a leg cramp, but the calcium in the milk will also help to reduce a deficiency which may cause a leg cramp.
  • During the day, drink five cups of chamomile tea for a two week period. Glycine is an amino acid in chamomile tea which can relieve muscle cramps. Chamomile can also be a relaxant and a remedy for a leg cramp.
  • Gently massage the tightened muscle causing a leg cramp. A hot shower or use of a hot water bottle may prevent leg cramps.
  • You can treat leg cramps by drinking a glass of warm water with a tablespoon of calcium lactate, apple cider vinegar, and a teaspoon of honey in it. Drink this mixture once a day.
  • Drink a cup of red raspberry tea every morning and evening to prevent or remedy nighttime leg cramps. 



The pain a person experiences from leg cramps can certainly be debilitating. The above recipes using essential oils can help to give you relief.
