Essential Oils For Ticks and Other Predators

Essential oils (EOs) are concentrated plant fragrances that are thought to improve health and wellness when applied correctly. Specifically, they contain powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiseptic (natural yeast) properties that make EOs an excellent source of homeopathic medicine. This makes EOs excellent not only for natural health and beauty, but for healing wounds, bug bites and tick repellent as well. Here's how Essential oils for ticks work.

Essential oils are concentrated pure plant fragrances that work on the nervous system to cause sensations that mimic those of a bite by a mosquito or other insect-borne arthropod. Aromatic compounds in the oils are generally referred to as essential oils and are considered a safe alternative to fragrances in traditional perfumes and body lotions. Essential oils include several hundred of the most common plant fragrances. In addition, some lipids, fatty acids, and polyphenols may also be considered essential oils. The fatty acids and polyphenols in the carrier oils of many natural essential oils are the components of the aromatic chemicals that give many of the plant's healthful health characteristics.

By combining carrier oil with high-quality essential oils, a quality homemade recipe for tick repellent can be made. For example, the essential oil myrrh is used in my homemade recipe for mosquito repellant. Myrrh is a strong sensual scent that appeals to many people. It has a very "in your face" nature that reminds one of the warm afternoons spent with friends enjoying a spa. Though myrrh is a safe, natural ingredient, it is still a very strong natural mosquito repellent that should not be used on open, bare skin.

If you have access to essential oils of any kind, you can make a safe, effective DIY essential oil tick repellent spray by combining myrrh with tea tree oil and peppermint leaves. All three ingredients should be combined in a spray bottle and shaken well before applying to any skin. An oil chart is available online that will show you the percentage strength of each essential oil that you will need to include in your homemade recipe for mosquito spray. Test a small amount first to make sure the concoction will not cause a reaction that will make your skin dry.

Some of the best essential oils for ticks contain a component known as citronella that emits a highly effective smell when a mosquito is nearby. When mosquitoes sense the scent, they go away. Some of the less commonly used, lower quality oils emit a less effective noisemaker that may scare off the insects but will not prevent them from biting. Essential oils that repel ticks include eucalyptus oil, juniper berry, cypress oil, and marjoram. A combination of one or all of these oils should be used to create a repellant safe to use around your yard.

It is also possible to make a very effective DIY repellant out of essential oils and the tansy oil. All you need for this are rosemary, lemon grass, lavender, orange, lime, cypress, grapefruit, cinnamon, and lemon grass. All of these oils are quite well known for their insect repelling properties and they can be used together to create a very effective DIY essential oil repellant. The blend of these oils is also quite good at preventing ticks from developing. Just add a few drops of the blend to a spray jar and spray down any areas that seem to be a problem area.

Using some of the natural essential oils against pests like ticks and mosquitoes has proven to be one of the most effective ways to get rid of these little bugs. The essential oils can be diluted a bit to make them a bit more bearable to apply to your skin. Essential oils can also be diluted with carrier oils like jojoba oil and olive oil before applying to skin and allowed to penetrate the skin to help keep mosquitoes and ticks away. These carrier oils can be mixed with a bit of lime juice to create a really effective mosquito mist. Using a few drops of each scent on your umbrella and furniture will deter mosquitoes and other insects from lingering around your home.

If you do not want to invest in commercial tick-borne diseases repellents, you can always try putting garlic cloves, coconut husks, cinnamon, juniper berry, rosemary, and lavender essential oils on your lawn and have them smell nice. Whenever you go out to enjoy a nice walk in nature or are just sitting around the house, spread a few drops on the ground and let the aroma take over for a few hours. You should see a difference in the way that ticks and other pests avoid you. If you cannot find a commercial product that works as well, you can always use some of the natural essential oils you have available to help prevent tick bites.
