How to Use Essential Oils For Sinus Infection

Used for thousands of years to alleviate and heal a variety of ailments, essential oils are naturally occurring substances that are present in the leaves, flowers, seeds, stems, and branches of different aromatic plants. They are widely used as aromatherapy and often serve as their own natural medicine. Their therapeutic properties come from the scents they produce when aromatherapy is used on them. Essential oils are light, non-toxic, yet can cause some skin irritations or allergic reactions if they are inhaled. Although they are non-allergenic, they can still be irritating to some people. And, they can even heal your sinuses without you even knowing it!

Sinusitis, or "sinus trouble" as it's often called, is a common chronic ailment that plagues millions of people throughout the developed world today. It can result in painful pressure and headaches; as well as the more serious symptoms of inflamed sinuses and nasal congestion, which includes pain, pressure, nasal drainage, itchiness and even ear pain. Fortunately, there are quite a few ways you can use essential oils to ease congestion and relieve the painful symptoms associated with this condition. Here, we'll take a look at a few tips.

Essential oils have traditionally been used to treat a variety of ailments, including headaches, fever, colds, indigestion, sprains and many others. However, they are most renowned for how they relieve the symptoms of sinusitis. Some of the best oils for sinusitis include Eucalyptus and camphor. These oils have a cooling effect that makes the membranes of the nasal passages become less sensitive. This lessens the irritation caused by thickened mucus, which causes blockage of the nasal passages and increased pressure in them. Essential oils such as camphor and eucalyptus are particularly good at reducing the swelling caused by sinus infections, which helps to alleviate the irritation.

Essential oils can also be used topically to treat various symptoms of a sinus infection. Some of these include basil and eucalyptus, both of which can reduce swelling and sooth nasal congestion. The other oils that can be used topically to treat and prevent chronic congestion include marjoram, thyme and clove. All of these oils can alleviate the symptoms associated with chronic congestion, especially when applied directly to the source of the congestion.

Essential oils also have antifungal properties that can be effective in treating symptoms of chronic sinus infections. Some of these include eucalyptus and spearmint, which can reduce the symptoms associated with colds and the flu. Some people who suffer from sinusitis may find that using peppermint or spearmint inhalation relieves the symptoms that they feel. Peppermint is also good for your lungs.

Another way to use topically-administered essential oils for a sinus infection is to inhale the steam from lemons. Lemon essential oil can strengthen your immune system and help to fight bacteria and viruses. It is therefore a very good idea to inhale a few drops of lemons per day in order to boost your immune system and fight off any type of illness. Lemon oil can also increase the effectiveness of your cilia, which are small hairs that spread the natural secretions of your body called saliva, over infected areas. So by inhaling a few drops of lemons on a daily basis you can improve your overall health and fight off colds and the flu better than you would with any other method.

For those of you out there who need fast and effective relief from a sinus infection then using instant relief products is a great solution. There are a lot of instant relief products on the market that contain essential oils that work very effectively to relieve symptoms. Just a few of these include: Eucalyptus, Calendula, Lavender, Burdock, Oregano, and Sandalwood. Although you can also find products that contain Rosemary and Thyme as well. These essential oils have been shown to reduce nasal congestion and thus provide relief from symptoms such as runny noses, blocked noses, headache and pain in the head as well as other body pains. Other ways that they relieve symptoms are by providing relief from congestion and the feeling of being heavy down in the nose.

One more way to use topically-administered essential oils for a sinus infection is to use baking soda as a gargle or on the skin. Baking soda has excellent antibacterial properties and has been used for years to treat minor infections in children. This natural remedy provides instant relief from headaches, nausea, fever and other body aches. To use this remedy you should inhale the steam from the baking soda into your nostrils while taking a hot bath. You can also apply this oil on to the skin and to your scalp as massage oil. Alternatively, you can drink the same steam infused with the oregano essential oil for a soothing tea.
