Using Essential Oils For Neuropathy Pain

There's a wide catalog of essential oils for neuropathy, each with its own specific healing/healing powers to benefit specific symptoms. Neuropathy refers to damage to one or more peripheral nerves in your body and can cause sensations of burning, tingling or numbness in your extremities. While there is no cure for this disease, many treatments are available. Common treatments include steroids, pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs. In some extreme cases, surgery may be necessary.

When considering essential oil treatment for nerve damage, it is best to start with the essentials. Diluted Tea Tree oil is one such oil. It is considered a dilution strength oil and is great for diluting essential oils for use in ointments, gels and creams. Dilution is important since the concentration level of a drug increases as the solution dries, thus the need to dilute oil solutions.

Lavender is one of the strongest natural anti-inflammatory essential oils. It has a combination of anti-oxidant and vasodilator properties to reduce swelling and relieve nerve pain. In addition to these properties, lavender has numerous other beneficial qualities such as anti-fungal properties, mild sedation and anti-depressant properties. Its pleasant, fragrant odor makes it ideal for aromatherapy use.

Another natural anti-inflammatory essential oil is Frankincense. Like lavender, frankincense has a pleasant, fresh fragrance. Frankincense is often used as an anti-inflammatory agent because it is effective at reducing the swelling and pain of inflammatory conditions such as neuropathy. Frankincense also contains the neuropathy-specific terpinen-4-ol which helps decrease the pain produced by neuropathic pains by decreasing the release of neurochemicals.

Several essential oils have antibiotic properties that are safe for use in the home to alleviate symptoms associated with neuropathy. Rosemary oil can be used both externally and internally to relieve inflammation caused by inflammation or infection. It is also effective at relieving pain. Both the rosemary and the lavender essential oils can be diluted for safe use to alleviate discomfort associated with these symptoms.

If you feel uncomfortable trying to swallow a teaspoonful of the essential oils, you can dilute them using a carrier oil such as grapefruit seed extract. Add a quarter teaspoonful of the carrier oil to a glass of water and mix thoroughly until the oil has completely dissolved. Add a drop or two of the carrier oil to your mouth, sipping slowly, to warm the mixture. Then, use a cotton swab to apply the warm mixture to your tongue and throat. Repeat this process for up to four times a day, using one drop of each essential oil or rosemary oil in two drops of grapefruit seed extract for each application. Using a cotton swab prevents excessive swallowing of the oil which can be dangerous if it gets into the lungs.

Essential oils that have anti-inflammatory properties may help relieve the nerve pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. A combination of capsaicin and eucalyptus oils may help reduce inflammation. These combinations are often used in combination in a cream that contains capsaicin and menthol. Other combination blends include basil, clove and cypress oil which may help relieve the nerve pain as well.

If you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, you should not use essential oils. Essential oils can increase inflammation and therefore interfere with blood flow in your body. Essential oils can also cause nausea and drowsiness so it is best to avoid them if possible. Essential oils can also cause numbness, tingling and a weakness in the grip so it is best to avoid them when possible.

The pain caused by diabetic neuropathy can range from dull aching to stabbing and excruciating pain. A great way to get relief from these painful symptoms is to combine ingredients that help with neuropathy and massage them directly into the affected areas. Essential oil blends such as cypress, rosewood and lemon work well in this situation. Another combination to look into is using a pure essential oil blend that has anti-inflammatory properties and then massaging it into the muscles of the affected area. You can also find pure essential oil blends that will soothe inflammation, relieve muscle spasms and control muscle cramps.

The effectiveness of essential oils for diabetic neuropathy depends on their concentration and how they are used. In some cases a pure essential oils product may provide only a short term pain relief because it is not being absorbed into the skin and into the muscle. To get long term relief from neuropathy symptoms you will want to use a product that includes both anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in its formula. Some of the products available for purchase do not include these vital ingredients and as a result can actually make the pain worse.

There are also special blends available that have been developed for people who have diabetes and suffer from neuropathy pain. These oils can help control the symptoms and relieve the pain, but they do not actually cure the illness itself. This is why it is important to speak with your health care provider before starting aromatherapy treatments. While essences oils can be a great addition to your daily routine, they should only be one component of your overall health regimen.
