Essential Oils For IBS

There is much evidence out there that suggests essential oils can be used for various health benefits. A common use would be aromatherapy, using essential oils to help relieve stress and improve relaxation. Essential oils have also been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of ailments, from headaches to skin disorders. It's time we looked at how essential oils work and where they come from.

Aromatherapy focuses on the relationship between a patient's body and the environment around them. Many essential oils are derived from plants that naturally produce pollen or other irritants, which when inhaled or absorbed by the skin can create different types of symptoms. While there are certain plants that are considered "allergy" triggers, most people find that a combination of certain aromatic plants can create a soothing, healing effect that makes the symptoms go away and reduces or eliminates the need for any other medication or treatments.

One example of this is the use of rosemary and lemon to soothe and relieve gas pains. When ingested, they cause a sensation of burning in the stomach, making it easier to move, reducing the amount of gas entering the body and making it easier to digest. When cramping occurs, a carrier oil, such as rosemary or lemon, is often recommended to relieve the pain. While there is no evidence that rosemary or lemons actually work to relieve bloating, many people swear by the relief they get from using them. If you've tried heating pads, icepacks or laxatives without success, try using an essential oil carrier oil instead.

Aromatherapy also has a lot to do with digestion and cramps. Although there's no clear evidence that essential oils help digestion or that they're beneficial when used for digestive problems, they can be useful when used in conjunction with other natural remedies for bloating. For instance, tea tree oil, a common ingredient in essential oils, is effective at decreasing gas production when consumed and it is also effective at helping the digestive tract perform properly by breaking down food more efficiently.

Although not exactly known how essential oils help digestion, it's believed that they may help relieve symptoms related to IBS, colitis and constipation. In addition, some people use them to help alleviate abdominal discomfort and cramping. Some people believe that by taking essential oils that can soothe and relax the digestive tract, it may help to alleviate symptoms. As may be expected, it's a bit of a hit-or-miss science when trying to figure out how these oils will affect your own particular symptoms, but they're certainly worth trying if they relieve your own symptoms.

Several essential oils are believed to be useful for treating constipation. These include ginger, an ancient remedy used to treat IBS, as well as lavender and thyme which have been used successfully in the treatment of diarrhea. However, while these oils may help relieve your own constipation they're not likely to be very helpful when you're dealing with diarrhea caused by another underlying problem. If your digestive issues are caused by a more serious issue like diabetes or a weak immune system you'll want to consult with a doctor before using any of these oils.

Several essential oils have been shown to be effective when used for digestive issues including IBS, colitis and constipation. Two of these essential oils - bergamot and peppermint - are available in most grocery stores and they are usually used as kitchen fresheners. However, if you suffer from IBS or other digestive disorders you may not need peppermint or bergamot for your relief. Peppermint can be purchased over the counter at your local drug store. Bergamot, on the other hand, is sold only by a specialty retailer and must be prescribed by a medical professional.

Several other essential oils are available as over the counter or prescription drugs. Tea tree oil is one of these and it has proven quite effective as a treatment for IBS and other digestive issues. It helps to reduce bloating, gas and stomach pain associated with IBS. Another essential oil, clove, is sold in many supermarkets under various names and is also known to help relieve IBS and other digestive problems. Lemon balm is another herbal remedy that may help your IBS symptoms. Lemon balm works by relaxing the intestines so they don't contract in response to stress and possibly reduce the inflammation that contributes to IBS symptoms.
