Best Resveratrol Supplement – June, 2018 Reviews & Product Guide

If you haven’t already heard about Resveratrol, you’re sure to soon.

In the 90’s it became known as the ‘French Paradox,’ and it’s being touted as a new wonder supplement with a multitude of benefits. Why is it called the ‘French Paradox’ you might ask? Well, the French are known for drinking lots of wine and eating lots of fatty foods, yet they are known to have some of the lowest rates of heart disease.

After some studies, some scientists attributed the longevity of the French population to a compound known as Resveratrol which is found in, among other things, the skins of grapes (in other words, a key ingredient in red wine).

Resveratrol acts as an antioxidant and is found naturally in the skin, stems, and seeds of grapes and Japanese Knotweed, (also known as Polygonum cuspidatum, peanuts, monkey weed, donkey rhubarb, some bamboo, and some berries. So, if you’ve read any articles about the health benefits of drinking red wine, Resveratrol is the reason behind the benefits.

There’s still quite a bit of research being done to fully understand Resveratrol’s possible benefits, but already there’s a lot of promise.

1. Resveratrol is supposed to be anti-aging, both internally and externally, including inhibiting and possibly reversing the effects of age-related conditions such as osteoporosis and mental decline.

2. Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, is caused by the breakdown of cartilage between the joints which can cause pain and lack of mobility. Studies have shown that Resveratrol supplements may not only treat joint pain but prevent it by helping to protect the cartilage from deteriorating. It may also reduce inflammation, a major cause of pain in arthritic patients.

3. It is possible that Resveratrol can protect your brain. It has shown to help reduce seizures and some neurotoxicities, as well as increasing lifespan and delaying Alzheimer’s disease. It has also been reported to improve memory. These effects may be (at least partly) do to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nature of resveratrol. It may not only interfere with plague causing protein fragments (the type which leads to Alzheimer’s disease) but may actually set things in place to protect damage to the brain on a cellular level.

4. If you’ve heard the studies about wine decreasing blood pressure, again, that Resveratrol. It’s supposedly a great way to stay heart-healthy.

5. Resveratrol may balance and regulate the metabolism by increasing insulin sensitivity in obese people. It has also been studied to prevent and treat diabetes. Other than regulating the metabolism by stopping certain enzymes from turning glucose into sorbitol (a sugar alcohol), studies are being conducted on the effects of Resveratrol against oxidative stress (which can cause complications with diabetes), help decrease inflammation (a key contributor to many chronic diseases, including diabetes), and may activate AMPK, a protein that helps the body metabolize glucose (and helps keep your blood sugar level low).

6. On this same tip, Resveratrol has been shown to facilitate weight loss, partially through regulating the metabolism and by enhancing mitochondrial function. When studied on mice, Resveratrol seems to influence cholesterol levels (lowering the bad and raising the good) by reducing the effect of an enzyme that controls cholesterol production.

7. Resveratrol is currently being studied as a way to protect against liver cancer and liver metastasis in humans, as well as a tool to fight esophageal cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia. It may do this by inhibiting cancer cell grown, by possibly changing gene expression, or by interfering with hormones that are expressed by cancer, keeping hormone-dependent cancers from spreading.

8. Aerobic performance and muscle growth are said to be improved under the influence of Resveratrol.

Information Every Informed Buyer Should Know when looking for the right Resveratrol Supplement:

You should know that though Resveratrol supplements have a lot of potentials to do wonderful things to your body and mind, a lot of the studies that have been conducted in other (non-human) mammals such as mice and rabbits. Though no major risks seem to be associated with the use of Resveratrol supplements, it should be noted that there are not conclusive recommendations about how much you should take to reap the health benefits.

Because Resveratrol blocks certain enzymes that help certain clear compounds from the body, that means that it could allow certain medications that you may be taking to build to unsafe levels in your body.

Please see below for which medications are not recommended for use in conjunction with Resveratrol. Resveratrol also binds to iron, so if you are anemic you may want to avoid this supplement.

Of course if you are taking any medications, it is best to talk to your health provider before taking any supplements. It is thought, however, that Resveratrol supplements might interact with blood thinners and NSAID medications like aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen (). Resveratrol might also interact with your estrogen levels, so women who have suffered from uterine or ovarian cancer, have endometriosis, or uterine fibroids should not use this supplement. As always, it is best to talk to your doctor about any supplements you take or are considering taking if you have just or plan to undergo surgery, or if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

If you are on medications that interact with your liver, including Allegra, Halcion, Mevacor, Nizoral, and Sporanox, you probably want to avoid this supplement. Antihistamines, immunosuppressants, anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs, erectile dysfunction medications, as well as antiviral and antifungal medications are also not recommended for use with Resveratrol.

Some studies show that the addition of other synergetic supplements can increase Resveratrol effectiveness, depending on which benefit you are trying to gain from it. In the same way, studies have shown that Resveratrol effectiveness is also highly dependent on your diet.

Apparently, when studied in mice, Resveratrol was most effective when paired with a high-fat diet as opposed to a low-fat diet or normal diet. Pairing Resveratrol with other flavonoids (such as Genistein or Quercetin), as well as Curcumin and Melatonin supposedly increases the potency of Resveratrol.

Dosage is extremely important in the effectiveness of Resveratrol, and although there are no conclusive studies that delineate the appropriate dosage based on some factors, there are some guidelines out there that may help you find the appropriate dosage for your needs.

Also, always be sure to speak with your healthcare provider and follow the label instructions to ensure that you are safely using this supplement.

Supposedly lower doses (from 5-10 mg daily) of Resveratrol are said to be beneficial for cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity, and longevity in those that are otherwise unhealthy. For healthy persons, the appropriate dosage for these same effects may be between 150-450 mg.

Higher doses of 500 mg (which it is recommended not to exceed) are generally used for those wishing to improve their cerebral blood flow, other cognitive functions, or as a prevention or treatment to cancer. Please also note that side effects of Resveratrol, particularly in large doses, include nausea and an upset stomach.

Bri Nutrition Resveratrol, 1200 mg, 60 Capsules

Bri Nutrition Resveratrol packs a little more punch than many of its competitors with a 600 mg dosage per serving as opposed to the common 500 mg. They advertise that their Resveratrol capsules are produced with Good Manufacturing Practices and made in the USA.

This supplement does include some other antioxidant and synergistic ingredients, including Pomegranate (a well-known antioxidant), Green Tea Extract, Grapeseed Extract, and Quercetin.

Bri Nutrition states that they test for the quality of each supplement at multiple stages during the production process and they guarantee purity. If fillers and potential allergens are a problem for you, however, they do not advertise the lack of these in their product and the ingredients do list Microcrystalline Cellulose and Magnesium Stearate as ingredients. The price point for this product is decent, definitely on the lower end of the spectrum though not one of the least expensive.

If you are looking for a product that contains a good punch of trans-Resveratrol at a decent price but are not concerned about fillers or potential allergens, you might want to try Bri Nutrition’s Resveratrol supplement.

Purity Labs Certified Organic Trans-Resveratrol Anti-Aging Superfood Supplement, 1,400 mg, 90 Capsules, with Green Tea, Pomegranate, and Anti-Oxidant Vitamin C

There is a whole lot going on in Purity Labs (Certified) Organic Trans-Resveratrol Supplement. Firstly, their packaging can be confusing- each serving does not contain 1,400 mg of Resveratrol, but rather 1,400 mg of all listed ingredients and only 500 (the recommended maximum dose) of trans-Resveratrol per Vegetarian Capsule.

Also, the recommended serving size is three pills, so 90 capsules would presumably only last you a month. They advertise that this is the highest potency available (at least on Amazon), though that doesn’t seem to be right as each capsule only contains 500 mg per capsule (according to their ingredients label).

Not only the capsules contain trans-Resveratrol, but a proprietary blend of antioxidants including Pomegranate, Grape Seed, Green Tea, and Vitamin C to boost the effects of Resveratrol.

Purity Labs also advertises that their product is given quality control tests by a third party to ensure quality before being bottled (in GMP certified manufacturing facilities) and sold. Their particular proprietary blend of Resveratrol is intended for use in boosting immunity, Anti-Aging, Brain Support, stress management, and to facilitate a healthily functioning metabolism.

On top of their Certified Organic Ingredients and vegetarian capsules, Purity labs promise that they use no unnecessary fillers, no trans fats, no preservatives, no soy, no dairy, no sugar, and no artificial flavors or colors. Their products are also advertised to be gluten and wheat free and non-GMO.

If you are looking to receive some of the anti-oxidant and body regulating benefits that Resveratrol is known for as well as purchase an organic product that’s free from allergens and fillers, this product may be right for you. If you’re only interested in the Resveratrol by itself for any reason, this product may not be the best fit. They do, however, offer a money back guarantee, so you can try out this supplement ‘ risk-free.’

Pros and Cons

  • Vegetarian and Certified Organic
  • Free of Additives, Dairy, Soy, Sugar, Gluten, GMO Ingredients, Trans Fats, Preservatives, and Artificial Colors and Flavors
  • Uses Trans-Resveratrol
  • Third Party Quality Control and Testing
  • Confusing Dosage Labeling

Reserveage Nutrition’s Resveratrol, 500 mg, 60 Capsules

If you’re looking for something that advertises promotion of longevity, Reserveage Nutrition states that their particular ‘award-winning’ time release blend is designed to ‘support and activate the SIRT1 longevity gene.’

It intends to provide cellular rejuvenation and antioxidant protection, and they say that they do this by reducing the amount of light, head, and oxidation that the grapes (from which their Resveratrol is derived) maintain their integrity of essential phytonutrients. It is also certified as Clinically Studied, Gluten Free, and Vegan. They also advertise that their product nourishes your body’s ‘3 Beauty Proteins – Collagen, Keratin, and Elastin.’

Another thing that Reserveage Nutrition has going for it is the inclusion of Quercetin in their proprietary blend. Studies have shown that Quercetin is synergetic with Resveratrol, and can help your body’s absorption of Resveratrol. On top of that, if other Resveratrol supplements have made you nauseous, the time release capsules may help quell those feelings.

Their blend of Resveratrol is not only derived from Japanese Knotweed Extract (as are many other brands) but from Organic French Whole Red Wine Grapes and Muscadine Whole Grapes. They advertise that they are free from unnecessary fillers, and this seems to be true although you can find rice bran and silica as ingredients in their capsules.

Of course the catch for such potent and naturally and organically derived ingredients is the price. So, as seems to often be the case, if you are looking for something that contains certified organic ingredients without potential allergens and fillers with a potent blend of ingredients (500 mg of trans Resveratrol) and are willing to pay extra to obtain them, this product may be right for you.

Pros and Cons

  • Free of unnecessary fillers
  • Free of many potential allergens
  • Vegetarian
  • Partially derived from whole organic grapes
  • Sustained Release
  • Quercetin as an added ingredient
  • Clinically Studied, Vegan, Gluten-free
  • Higher Price Point

Biotiva - Bio-Enhanced Transmax Resveratrol, 500 mg, 60 Capsules

The most significant inhibitor in buying this supplement may be the cost, but if you are willing to spend a little extra for a very potent supplement, this may be the product for you.

The brand, Biotiva, touts itself as the world’s most respected supplement with 100 percent pure Polygonum Cuspidatum extract ‘from organic and wild plant sources.’

It boasts 500 mg of pure trans-Resveratrol with small amounts of ‘all-natural’ Piperine and Polydatin to increase body absorption rates. On top of this, it is vegetarian and gluten-free, as well as free from fillers, silica, artificial colors, and magnesium stearate.

According to the manufacturer’s website, it’s also used by medical institutions for research in human clinical trials, including NIH, Einstein College of Medicine, Stony Brook University, Health Canada, Turin University Medical School, University of Ferrara, Italy, University of Northumbria, UK due to it’s 100 percent pure polygonum cuspidatum extract.

Again, according to their website, they are also the only 500 mg Resveratrol capsule to be brand evaluated by Consumer Lab. Transmax also touts itself as being the single Resveratrol supplement that contains utterly no synthetic or GMO Resveratrol and no fillers, additives, or expanders. It is also Kosher, Halal, and Vegan Certified.

Resveratrol – Additional Information

If you are seeking out a Resveratrol supplement, always be sure to keep in mind that trans Resveratrol has been shown to be the most absorbable by the body and that the standardized rate of dilution is 50%.

If you’re past the glass of red wine and square of dark chocolate for your daily antioxidant and are considering taking Resveratrol, make sure that you talk to your health practitioner first, particularly if you are already taking any medication or other supplements as they may interact with Resveratrol. Also, if it’s your first time taking Resveratrol and you’d like to judge its effect on your body, we suggest opting for a supplement that contains only trans-Resveratrol or a blend of trans Resveratrol and Quercetin.

This way you can judge the efficacy of the product without being affected by other ingredients such as Green Tea Extract or Vitamin C, which could cause a change in your performance.

Conclusion

Resveratrol could be a powerful link to a multitude of health benefits, including increased longevity, anti-aging properties, better brain health and prevention for certain types of cancers. Please keep in mind that there are a lot more studies to be done to reach conclusive dosage guidelines as well as general efficacy of the product. If you want to feel more energized and at least get the benefits of a strong antioxidant, Resveratrol may be perfect for you.
